Two teams have just returned from a fantastic trip around the North Island of New Zealand. The first week was spent having a good look around the country experiencing a number of team building and self- improvement activities at Agroventures, zorbing and rafting. At the Maori village the group had fun watching their Chief (Stuart) get singled out by some very scary Maori warriors and accept the offer of a peaceful meeting. The group then discovered many traditional Maori games, food, clothing, warrior training and a few had a go at learning the Haka. This was followed by excellent food cooked in the traditional Hungi style and entertained with superb Maori style singing.
We then travelled to Palmerston North for the New Zealand Volleyball Schools Cup. Both teams played well all week with the Girls finishing with a Gold in Division 4 playing superb volleyball to defeat a team that beat them earlier in the week. The Boys gained a Silver in Division 1. The first time a Heathfield team has made it to the final of their premier division defeating the 2nd and 3rd ranked schools in semifinals to get to the grand final. The boys eventually went down to the top seed, a strong, well drilled team from Rotorua, Western Heights. The game was played in front of a huge crowd of Kiwi’s and many back home watched the game at home as it was streamed live online.
Everyone had an experience they will never forget and they forged friendships within the group and with a huge number of New Zealand players as well. Staff members on the trip Mia Heikkonen and Stuart Scott were extremely proud of the students throughout the entire journey as they were fantastic ambassadors for Heathfield wherever they went.

Mt Lofty entered 5 teams in the Pt Augusta open last weekend and won both divisions in the Men's competition with the Div 1 team defeating Roxby 3-0 in a clinical display of power hitting behind great passing and clever setting. The Div 2 mens team were smashed by TTG Trojans in the minor round but were able to defeat them 3-1 in a hard fought final. The Div 2 girls in the grand final came from 2 sets down and 18-12 down to fight back to win that set and the next to take the match to a fifth set. Pt Augusta regrouped and this match went down to the wire with Lofty just missing out 19-17 in the fifth. In Div 1 the young girls had a fantastic learning experience, taking it right up to every side in the competition. An excellent weekend with many thanks to the coaches, the parents for transport, Rob and Jen Ambagtsheer for the catering and Vaughan Farmilo and the Mt Lofty Volleyball club for their support.

The 2013 Lunch and Crunch was a great success despite rain all day and everyone playing indoor. The modified game play of "King of the court" was a lot of fun and everyone was involved at all times. Parents and teachers praised the work of the Heathfield students who made the day even more fun for the players.
A fantastic weekend for the U15 teams that played last weekend. Everyone gained valuable competition practice and Heathfield were in both Grandfinals with both narrowly going down to very strong Norwood teams 15-12 in the deciding set.

After a great weekend of not dropping a match, the boys team defeated Bendigo Academy 3-0 in the Grand Final. Excellent blocking and great defence created plenty of opportunity for the many hitters in the team. Everyone played well, but the stand outs were Damien Nicholls as the Libero, Jordan Colotti setting superbly and Regan Fathers dominating the attack. The girls were in Division 1 and played well all weekend, just missing 3rd in their pool on percentage. They finished with a comfortable win to finish 7th in a very strong competition. Mia Suraharjo was awarded the MVP for that division.

Great photos from the week
Both teams were placed in division 3/4 due to the situation in Christchurch where no International teams were put in Division 1/2 for the top 32 teams. The boys won their way into the final of division 3 and went down in the first two sets to a well drilled team from Timaru. Fighting back to win the next three was very exciting in a tough, hard fought encounter. The girls had a couple of strong teams to start the week and ended up in Division 4. They won their way into the semifinals and lost in a very tight 5 set match. They bounced back to win the bronze in a high quality match.
Term 2 and 3 Indoor volleyball begins in week 2 of term 2. Latecomers are welcome until week 4.
