Pre-Requisite:

English as an Additional Language in the SACE is designed for students who speak English as a second or additional language or dialect, and whose English language proficiency is restricted.


All students who want to enrol in an English as an additional language subject will be required to apply to the SACE Board for eligibility. Students whose eligibility applications are approved for Stage 1 English as an additional language do not have to reapply for eligibility to enrol in Stage 2 English as an Additional Language.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

English as an Additional Language is designed for students for whom English is a second language or an additional language or dialect. These students have had different experiences in English and one or more other languages. Students who study this subject come from diverse personal, educational, and cultural backgrounds.

Stage 1 English as an Additional Language is designed to improve students' general proficiency in the English language. There is an emphasis on communication, comprehension, analysis, and text creation. This subject leads to Stage 2 English as an Additional Language, which has a focus on developing students' academic literacy skills, and may also lead to other Stage 2 English subjects.

Students who complete this subject with a C grade or better will meet the literacy requirement of the SACE.

ASSESSMENT

The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 1 English as an Additional Language:

  • assessment type 1: academic literacy study
  • assessment type 2: responses to texts
  • assessment type 3: language study

Assessment types 1 & 2 are school-based assessments

Assessment type 3 is an externally-assessed exam

Students are assessed against the SACE performance standards for SACE Stage 1 English as an Additional Language:

  • communication
  • comprehension
  • analysis
  • application
