Immanuel 2017

On Saturday the 18th of February seven Heathfield U15 teams represented the school at the first ever Immanuel Volleyball Tournament. The Year 8 students have only had 2 weeks worth of trainings at school along with the sessions that were run in Term 3 last year for Year 7’s selected into the volleyball squad.

Teams played in 20 minute lightning carnival games against other teams from Norwood, Immanuel, USC Lion and Mercedes. After a long day filled with lots of volleyball, music and fun we had Heathfield teams make both the U15 girls and U15 boys Grand Finals. Unfortunately Heathfield Girls White lost to Norwood 2:0 and Heathfield Boys Blue went down to Immanuel 2:1.

Massive thanks goes to senior students Jack Angwin, Noah Wilson, Bryanna Eden, Esther Barnard, Constance Kilkenny-Jones and Chelsea Knight for coaching our Heathfield teams all day. Without the guidance and knowledge that these students passed onto our Year 8 players they certainly wouldn’t have gotten as much learning out of their experience as they did.

We have already had a big squad meeting and are getting ready to work hard again.

We have in the pipeline Warrnambool for the Senior players, Immanuel Challenge, Gold Ball and the Riverland tour for the Younger players. We have had the Yr 8 Parent evening and the Yr 12 lunch so we are well under way.

Team App is the best path for instant communications.

New Zealand trip 2015.

Two teams have just returned from a fantastic trip around the North Island of New Zealand. The first week was spent having a good look around the country experiencing a number of team building and self- improvement activities at Agroventures, zorbing and rafting.  At the Maori village the group had fun watching their Chief (Stuart) get singled out by some very scary Maori warriors and accept the offer of a peaceful meeting. The group then discovered many traditional Maori games, food, clothing, warrior training and a few had a go at learning the Haka. This was followed by excellent food cooked in the traditional Hungi style and entertained with superb Maori style singing.
We then travelled to Palmerston North for the New Zealand Volleyball Schools Cup.  Both teams played well all week with the Girls finishing with a Gold in Division 4 playing superb volleyball to defeat a team that beat them earlier in the week. The Boys gained a Silver in Division 1. The first time a Heathfield team has made it to the final of their premier division defeating the 2nd and 3rd ranked schools in semifinals to get to the grand final.  The boys eventually went down to the top seed, a strong, well drilled team from Rotorua, Western Heights. The game was played in front of a huge crowd of Kiwi’s and many back home watched the game at home as it was streamed live online.
Everyone had an experience they will never forget and they forged friendships within the group and with a huge number of New Zealand players as well. Staff members on the trip Mia Heikkonen and Stuart Scott were extremely proud of the students throughout the entire journey as they were fantastic ambassadors for Heathfield wherever they went.

Boys win gold in New Zealand, Girls a bronze

Both teams were placed in division 3/4 due to the situation in Christchurch where no International teams were put in Division 1/2 for the top 32 teams. The boys won their way into the final of division 3 and went down in the first two sets to a well drilled team from Timaru. Fighting back to win the next three was very exciting in a tough, hard fought encounter. The girls had a couple of strong teams to start the week and ended up in Division 4. They won their way into the semifinals and lost in a very tight 5 set match. They bounced back to win the bronze in a high quality match.

Heathfield wins Gold in Boys and Gold in Girls Grand Finals

What a great weekend. Another fantastic Gold Ball tournament. Thanks to the teams who participated and a big thank you to Janice and Stuart Scott who were the tournament directors. Also a big thanks to the Heathfield parents and players who worked the canteen all weekend.

Mikasa Australia donated 20 pair of kneepads for the winning teams and Bendigo Bank donated the winners and the runner up trophies. Also thanks to our long term sponsor Bakers Delight for their continued support.
