SACE Website:  https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/web/child-studies/stage-1

Pre-Requisite: Satisfactory Achievement of year 10 child studies would be an advantage, though not a requirement

Students examine the period of childhood from birth to 8 years, and issues related to the growth, health, and well-being of children. They examine diverse attitudes, values, and beliefs about childhood and the care of children, the nature of contemporary families, and the changing roles of children in a contemporary consumer society.

Students have the opportunity to develop problem solving skill, applying solutions to practical situations. This is a useful subject for students to complete if interested in working with children or completing Stage 2 Child Studies.

Topics may include

  • child development 5 to 8 years
  • working with junior primary children
  • developing learning activities in a culturally diverse society

Students are assessed through the South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE).

4 assignment tasks will form the basis of the assessment and students will be assessed against the SACE board assessment design criteria.

  • 2 x practical activities
  • 1 x group activity
  • 1 x investigation

Additional Information

Excursions to the local primary school will take place as part of the assessment.

It is a government requirement that people visiting pre-schools/kindergartens to take part in activities have a WWCC clearance.  This will be organised through the school, however any costs assocatied with this clearance will be invoiced to the student.

Students do need to plan and make some resources and may choose to bring some materials from home. This is not compulsory, appropriate materials are provided at school.
