SUBJECT OVERVIEW

SACE Stage 1 Drama challenges students to refine their performance and production skills while developing a deeper understanding of dramatic theory and practice. Students generate creative and imaginative solutions to the staging of theatrical works, both scripted and devised. Through engagement with diverse perspectives and contemporary theatre practices, they extend their ability to communicate meaningfully with an audience.

The course focuses on modern theatre styles, innovative technologies, influential practitioners, and play scripts. Students participate in individual and group performance projects, choosing to explore either onstage or offstage roles. They analyse texts, apply theoretical frameworks, and reflect on their creative decisions to deepen their understanding of theatre as both an art form and a tool for communication.

Students also have opportunities to attend live theatre and workshops, using these experiences to inform their own artistic practice through structured responses and evaluations.

Topics may include

  • Presentation of dramatic works
  • Dramatic theory and practice including analysis, evaluation and production
  • Individual investigation and onstage or offstage presentation of specific genres
  • Opportunity to respond to live theatre/workshops
