Pre-Requisite: Satisfactory Achievement of year 10 outdoor education would be an advantage, though not a requirement

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Outdoor Education is the study of the human connection to natural environments through outdoor activities. Students develop their sense of self-reliance and build relationships with people and natural environments. Outdoor Education focuses on the development of awareness of environmental issues through observation and evaluation. By participating in outdoor activities, students develop knowledge and skills, and reflect on their personal, group, and social development.

Topics may include

Practical components include:

  • rock climbing (3 day excursions)
  • bushwalking (3 day camp)
  • surfing

Theory components include:

  • environmental studies
  • planning and management practices
  • outdoor journeys
  • sustainable bushwalking
  • leadership and group dynamics

ASSESSMENT

Students are assessed against the SACE Stage 1 Outdoor Education achievement standards.

  • practical skills evaluation
  • environmental investigation
  • planning documents

Additional Information

Costs: Course fee $500 to cover costs associated with each of the two expeditions and lead up activities.

In selecting this subject students will need to be prepared to undertake aspects of the course out of normal school hours, especially the expeditions and lead-up activities.
