12 Essential Mathematics

Pre-Requisite:   An achievement level of "C" or better in at least one semester of Stage 1 General Mathematics is highly recommended.

The subjects Numeracy and 11 Essential Mathematics 1 do not provide a pathway to studying this course.

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Essential Mathematics offers senior secondary students the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. Students apply their mathematics to diverse settings, including everyday calculations, financial management, business applications, measurement and geometry, and statistics in social contexts.

  • measurement
  • business applications
  • statistics
  • investments and loans

In Essential Mathematics there is an emphasis on developing students' computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways.

ASSESSMENT

A variety of tasks allow students to develop knowledge, skills and understanding through

  • innovation and creativity
  • critical thinking and problem solving
  • effective oral and written communication 
  • knowledge and understanding

Assessment tasks include:

  • skills and applications tasks – 30% 
  • mathematical investigations – 40% 
  • examination – 30%

Additional Information

Be aware when choosing this subject that a minimum number of students is required for all subjects to run, and Yr 12 Essential Mathematics often does not meet this threshold, so does not always run.

Note that participation in this course requires the purchase of a graphics calculator - Heathfield High School uses the Casio fx-CG50 AU calculators.
