12 Essential Mathematics

Pre-Requisite:   An achievement level of "C" or better in at least one semester of Stage One General Mathematics or an achievement level of “B” or better in Stage One Essential Mathematics is highly recommended.


Essential Mathematics offers senior secondary students the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. Students apply their mathematics to diverse settings, including everyday calculations, financial management, business applications, measurement and geometry, and statistics in social contexts. 

Topics may concern

  • scales, plans and models
  • measurement
  • business applications
  • statistics
  • investments and loans

In Essential Mathematics there is an emphasis on developing students' computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways. 



A variety of tasks allow students to develop knowledge, skills and understanding through

  • effective oral and written communication 
  • knowledge and understanding

Assessment tasks include:

  • skills and applications tasks
  • mathematical investigations
  • examination
