12 General Mathematics

SACE Stage 2:  20 Credits / 2 Semesters / Advanced Technologies

SACE Website:  https://www.sace.sa.edu.au/web/general-mathematics

Pre-Requisite: An achievement level of 'B' or better in General Mathematics or an achievement level of 'C' in Stage 1 Mathematics and a pass in the Stage 1 Mathematics exam is highly recommended.

General mathematics extends mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem solving. A problem-based approach is integral to the development of mathematical models and the associated key concepts in the topics. Topics cover a diver range of applications of mathematics, including personal financial management, the statistical investigation process, modelling using linear and non-linear functions, and discrete modelling using networks and matrices. Successful completion of general mathematics at Stage 2 prepared students for entry to tertiary courses requiring a non-specialised background in mathematics.

Topics may include

  • modelling with linear relationships
  • modelling with matrices
  • statistical models
  • financial models
  • discrete models

Assessment tasks include:

School-based assessment:

  • 5 Skills and application tasks, one without the use of either a calculator or notes) (40%).
  • 2 Investigations (30%).

External assessment:

  • Exam (30%).
