12 Society and Culture

Pre-Requisite: An achievement level of ‘C’ or better in year 11 English and another Humanities subject is highly recommended. 

SUBJECT OVERVIEW

Students explore and analyse the interactions of people, societies, cultures and environments. They learn how social, political, historical, environmental, economic and cultural factors affect different societies; and how people function and communicate in and across cultural groups.

The social inquiry approach to learning forms the core of the study of society and culture. Through the study of a topic, students develop skills in various approaches to investigate and analyse contemporary social issues. They become familiar with the limits and potential of these approaches and methods, and with the ethical issues associated with them.

Through their study of society and culture, students develop the ability to influence their own futures, by developing skills, values and understandings that enable effective participation in contemporary society.

  • Youth culture
  • Aboriginal inequalities
  • The future of work
  • Influences of social media
  • Human Rights

Students are also required to complete one oral and one group task for their Interaction.

ASSESSMENT

The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 2 Society and Culture:

School Assessment (70%)

  • Assessment Type 1: Folio (50%)
  • Asessment Type 2: Interaction (20%)

External Assessment (30%)

  • Assessment Type 3: Investigation (30%)

Students undertake:

  • At least three assessments for the folio
  • At least two assessments for the interaction
  • One investigation

Students are assessed against the Stage 2 Society and Culture performance standards:

  • Knowledge and understanding
  • Investigation and analysis
  • Collaboration
  • Evaluation and commination

Additional Information

It is important to note this subject involves extended writing, active research and class discussions.
